So, I decided to call Scotts Consumer Help Line (1-888-270-3714) before I ventured out into the garden with my daughter with ana PA. I had heard rumors of peanuts as ingredients in potting soil, and wanted to get more information. I spoke with Josh, a customer service representative about whether or not peanuts and/or tree nuts are used as fillers in Miracle-Gro® potting/planting soils. He confirmed that YES… peanuts and tree nuts are used in some of thier soil mixes. Here’s the scoop:
The following Scott products contain Peanuts and/or Tree Nuts. Specific ingredients (e.g. which nuts and % of ingredients) vary by region. Even with the lot number of the packaging, they do not require this information from their suppliers, so they cannot guarantee the allergen contents:
- MiracleGro® Moisture Control Potting Mix.
- Miracle-Gro® Potting Mix
The following Scott products ARE SAFE for Peanut/Tree-Nut allergic individuals (and of course, costs more)
- Miracle-Gro® Organic Choice® Potting Mix
- Miracle-Gro® Organic Choice® Garden Soil
With this information, what’s a mom to do? My plan is to call the manufacturer before purchasing any planting soils and mixes, be sure to wear gloves while gardening, and wash thoroughly after planting. Not to mention, carefully washing any produce from our garden.
I’ve got a call into Merrifield Garden Center to find out thier ingredients. I’ll keep you posted.
